Leadership, Reinvention and The Power of Small Choices
What I learned from my conversation with Dave Callan.
One thing I love from every conversation on Extrology is the fact that I can’t fail but to learn from the experiences, thoughts and perspectives of those with whom I engage. My latest conversation with Dave Callan was yet another in more than 115 such conversations and this one resonated deeply.
Dave’s journey, whilst certainly not unique but undoubtedly courageous, has seen him take the leap from his (relative) comfort zone of senior leadership responsibility with iconic brands such as Manchester United, Team Sky and Ineos, to stepping out on his own and coaching others. Oh and along the way, he’s thrown in the small matter of running a 250km ultra-marathon across the Namibian desert. It’s fair to say he’s taken a giant leap and that in itself deserves recognition and plaudits, but what struck me most wasn’t just his achievements—it was the clarity and depth of his insights into life, leadership, and growth.
As I reflect on our conversation, here are some of the lessons I took away that I believe can benefit us all, no matter where we are on our personal or professional journeys.
1. Pain Can Be a Teacher
Dave described reframing the pain he endured during the ultra-marathon. Rather than seeing discomfort as an enemy, he embraced it as a companion—an opportunity to learn more about himself, his limits and his resilience.
How often do we shy away from challenges because they’re uncomfortable? Dave’s story is a reminder that pushing through discomfort can reveal strengths we didn’t know we had. I love the idea of getting comfortable with being uncomfortable, it’s here the growth really happens. Dave is a shining example of just that.
2. Reinvention Requires Courage
Dave’s decision to transition from a high-powered corporate career to a personal coaching practice wasn’t an easy one. It required self-reflection, the willingness to take risks and an understanding of his core values.
For those of us considering a pivot—whether it’s in career, lifestyle, or mindset— his journey serves as proof that bold choices can lead to fulfilment and purpose. I accept fully that pivot is simply too daunting for some, but the facts are the big wins reside on the other side of fear.
3. Small Choices Create Big Outcomes
Whether it was taking the next step in the desert or navigating high-stakes decisions in the corporate world, Dave stressed the importance of small, intentional choices. It’s not always about grand gestures; it’s about the consistent, deliberate actions that build momentum and shape our lives over time.
4. Emotional Honesty Is Key
Dave spoke about the importance of being honest with ourselves about our emotions. Acknowledging fear, doubt, or anxiety isn’t a sign of weakness—it’s the first step to overcoming them and moving forward with clarity and confidence.
Why This Conversation Matters
Dave’s story is one of resilience, reinvention, and relentless curiosity about what lies beyond our perceived limits. Whether you’re navigating a career pivot, facing personal challenges, or simply looking for inspiration to take on 2025, his lessons are both practical and deeply human.
