My Journey with Multiple Sclerosis with Extrology’s Host, Lee Cooper #85

See this content in the original post

Dear Extrology Listeners,

This is an episode that is a little out of the ordinary for Extrology - but a personal story I’ve been wanting to share with you all for a while.

Yes, I have spent time going back and forth, considering whether it is the right topic to share on the podcast, changing my mind over and over again.

But Extrology is all about sharing stories of overcoming adversity, adapting through change, and achieving the extraordinary.  The countless guests I’ve been fortunate to entertain have, in many cases, had to dig incredibly deep to find the courage to share their own very personal battles.

The least I can do is follow their shining example and put into practice the lessons I have learned from their courage.

So it only seems right to share my journey as I battle with my Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis.

My goal of this episode is to share how I’ve learnt to find strength in moments of uncertainty, to educate others on MS, and to inspire those who may be also struggling with the disease, or other health conditions, to find support and forge their own journey forward.

Thank you for listening.  I really appreciate it.

Episode highlights:

“I had what I would best describe as a lightning bolt moment. Quite literally, at the height of the penalty shootout, what felt like an intense electric shock went right the way through my system. ” - 2:30 - Lee Cooper

“I remember my consultant having said to me, ‘The likelihood is that you have multiple sclerosis’, to which my response at that time was, ‘Oh, thank you’.” - 7:30 - Lee Cooper

“I have something called RRMS or relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis. It's the most common form of MS and accounts for about 85% of initial diagnoses.” - 16:40 - Lee Cooper

“I'm not suggesting that what works for me will work for you. I think you've just got to try and find a way of dealing with it as best you can. But I prioritise exercise, particularly weights, because I think the stronger I can be the better equipped I'm going to be to be able to deal with whatever my body might choose to throw at me.” - 22:35 - Lee Cooper
